01. Connection form of hydraulic cylinder
The cylinder barrel tube is the main body of the hydraulic cylinder. The two ends of the cylinder barrel are connected to the cylinder head and the cylinder bottom respectively to form a closed pressure chamber.
The connection forms between the cylinder barrel tube and the cylinder head and the cylinder bottom of the hydraulic cylinder include threaded connection, key connection, flange connection, tie rod connection, welding, etc. Today we will learn about the two commonly used ones – tie rod cylinder and welded cylinder.
02.Welding cylinder
The rear cover of the welded hydraulic cylinder is welded to the cylinder barrel, the oil port is welded to the cylinder barrel, and the front cover and the cylinder barrel are usually fixed with threads or bolts.
Welded hydraulic cylinders feature a narrower body and shorter overall length, allowing them to fit more closely within the confines of machine designs.
Advantages of welding cylinder:
1) Appearancesmall size;
2) High strength, able to withstand certain impact loads;
3) Can be customized according to the situation special oil ports, special installation methods, additional locking valves, etc.
Disadvantages of welded cylinders:
1) It is easy to cause deformation of the cylinder barrel during welding;
2) It is not easy to repair. The structure of the welded cylinder determines that it isrelatively difficult to disassemble and assemble. Some cylinders need to destroy the end cover to be removed.
03. Tie rod cylinder
Tie rod hydraulic cylinders use screw rods to hold the cylinder head and cylinder bottom together. These screw rods run through the entire length of the hydraulic cylinder tube, and bolts hold the bottom plate and head together.
Small-diameter hydraulic cylinders generally use four screw rods, while large-diameter hydraulic cylinders can increase the number of screw rods, such as 6, 8, or 16, to ensure the pressure resistance of the hydraulic cylinder.
Depending on the use pressure, the screw rod is made of different materials, which may be A3, CK45, or alloy steel.
Tie rod hydraulic cylinders usually have static seals to prevent leakage between the cylinder and the end cover interface.
Advantages of tie rod cylinders:
1) Good processability andwide versatility;
2) Convenient disassembly and assembly,easy maintenance;
3) Most of them are standard products, accessories can be mass-produced, semi-finished products or finished products are generally in stock, and thedelivery time is short.
Disadvantages of tie rods:
1) The end cap is large in size and weight, and the tie rod will stretch its side length after being stressed, affecting the sealing effect. It is only suitable formedium and low pressure hydraulic cylinders;
2) The options for customizability are limited;
3) The durability is lower than that of welded cylinders.
04. How to choose tie rod cylinder and welding cylinder
The best is the suitable one. Tie rod cylinders and welded cylinders have their own advantages and disadvantages. We must choose the right hydraulic cylinder according to the working conditions we face.

1) There is enough installation space;
2) Effective maintenance and repair are required;
3) Low-pressure applications are running;
4) The budget is limited and you want to choose a lower-priced product.
When facing the following situations, you canchoose welded hydraulic cylinders:
1) Limited installation space;
2) Require high-quality sealing packaging;
3) Run high-pressure applications that require higher durability and load capacity;
4)Special oil port forms, or special needs such as the need to install hydraulic locks, balancing valve blocks, etc.
