How to maintain hydraulic cylinders?

Maintenance of hydraulic cylinders is crucial for ensuring their long-term reliable operation, preventing sudden failures, and extending their service life. A comprehensive maintenance plan should be divided into three levels: “daily inspections,” “periodic inspections and maintenance,” and “monitoring under special operating conditions.” The core principle is “prevention first, monitoring foremost.”

I. Daily Inspection

Objective: To quickly identify abnormal signs using sensory observation and simple tools.

1. Visual Inspection (Looking)

Leakage inspection: Focus on checking the piston rod surface for oil film or dripping oil (external leakage); check the cylinder welds, end cap joint surfaces, and pipe connections for leaks.

Piston rod surface: Check for any new scratches, dents, corrosion, or plating peeling. Even minor scratches can damage the seal.

Installation status: Check if the mounting bolts and clevis pins are loose.

Dust cover (dust seal): Check for damage or detachment. Its function is to prevent dust, cutting fluid, and other contaminants from entering.

2. Auditory inspection (listening)

Abnormal noises: During operation, listen for impact sounds (cushioning failure or load impact), friction hissing sounds (overly tight seals or poor lubrication), and cavitation crackling sounds (air suction).

3. Tactile and Operational Observation (Touching and Observing)

Temperature: Touch the cylinder barrel tube (especially the guide bushing area) to check for abnormal temperature increase (it should not exceed 60°C; if it feels hot to the touch, it is abnormal).

Movement Status: Observe whether the piston rod moves smoothly, and whether there is any “crawling” (intermittent movement), shaking, or uneven speed.

Stopping Position: For vertical cylinders or locking cylinders, observe whether there is any “natural sinking” after stopping (a sign of internal leakage).

II. Regular Inspection and Maintenance (Performed by professional maintenance personnel according to schedule)

According to the schedule, the hydraulic cylinder should be regularly disassembled and inspected internally. The main focus is on checking the cylinder barrel tube, piston, piston rod, guide bushing, and seals for wear or damage, so that timely repairs or replacements can be made. This is the core of preventive maintenance, and the cycle (e.g., monthly, quarterly, annually) is determined based on the equipment’s importance, usage intensity, and environment.

1. Cleaning: Thoroughly clean the outer surface of the hydraulic cylinder, especially the piston rod, to prevent contaminants from being drawn into the cylinder during extension and retraction.

2. Lubrication: Apply grease to all exposed pins and eyelet bearings to ensure flexible movement and reduce additional lateral forces.

3. Functional Re-inspection: Re-check internal leakage and pressure holding performance under system pressure.

4. Hydraulic Cylinder Disassembly and Inspection: Conduct a comprehensive inspection and evaluation of the hydraulic cylinder to perform preventive maintenance in advance.

III. Targeted Maintenance under Special Working Conditions

1. High-temperature environment: Shorten the oil inspection cycle, focusing on oil viscosity reduction and oxidation, and select high-temperature resistant seals.

2. High-dust/humid environment: Strengthen the inspection and replacement frequency of dust covers to ensure the piston rod surface is clean and dry, preventing corrosion and abrasive wear.

3. High-impact/high-frequency reciprocating conditions: Shorten the fastening inspection cycle, focusing on the condition of welds, threads, and pins.

4. Long-term idle equipment: The piston rod should be fully retracted or extended to reduce the exposed area; apply anti-rust grease to all exposed metal surfaces (especially the piston rod); periodically run the hydraulic cylinder for a short stroke a few times to form an oil film on the sealing surface to prevent sticking and corrosion.

IV. The Four Keeps of Maintenance

1. Keep it clean: Oil, piston rod, and working environment.

2. Keep it tight: All mechanical connection points.

3. Keep it lubricated: Moving parts and articulation points.

4. Keep monitoring: Oil condition, temperature, noise, and motion performance.

By strictly implementing daily inspections and regular maintenance, most malfunctions can be eliminated in their early stages, significantly reducing unplanned downtime and overall maintenance costs, and maximizing the lifespan and safe operation of hydraulic cylinders.
