Hydraulic Cylinder Installation Guide and Precautions

In hydraulic systems, hydraulic cylinders are crucial actuators whose role cannot be underestimated, much like our muscles. Proper mounting and installation methods not only ensure stable operation but also extend their service life and improve the reliability of the entire mechanical system. Today, we’ll delve deeper into hydraulic cylinder mounting methods and installation considerations.

I. Mounting Types

1. Earring Mount

This mounting method connects the hydraulic cylinder to the mechanical component via earrings at each end of the cylinder barrel. The earrings allow the hydraulic cylinder to oscillate within a certain range of angles, making it suitable for applications requiring the hydraulic cylinder to oscillate.

The advantage is flexible installation, adapting to varying working angles. The disadvantage is its relatively complex structure and space requirements.

2. Flange Mount

The flange mount connects the ends of the hydraulic cylinder barrel to the mechanical component via flanges. This mounting method is secure and reliable, capable of withstanding significant axial and radial loads.

It is suitable for applications requiring high stability, such as heavy machinery. However, its installation is relatively complex and requires precise alignment.

3. Foot-Mounted

Foot-mounting uses the foot at the bottom of the hydraulic cylinder to connect to the mechanical component. This simple and convenient mounting method is suitable for small hydraulic cylinders and applications with limited installation space.

The foot-fixed hydraulic cylinder has better stability, but its load-bearing capacity is relatively weak.

There are some other forms of fixing methods, please see the figure below:

II. Installation Precautions

1. Pre-Installation Inspection

Before installing the hydraulic cylinder, carefully inspect the cylinder for damage and seals. If damaged, replace them promptly.

Also, verify that the hydraulic cylinder model and specifications comply with design requirements to ensure proper installation.

2. Installation Environment Requirements

The hydraulic cylinder should be installed in a clean, dry environment. Avoid installation in harsh environments such as those with corrosive gases and dust.

The installation location should be easily accessible for maintenance and repair to ensure prompt repair in the event of a hydraulic cylinder malfunction.

3. Installation Accuracy Requirements

When installing a hydraulic cylinder, ensure the accuracy of its connection to the mechanical components. Especially for flange-mounted installations, ensure the flange’s centering accuracy to avoid uneven force on the hydraulic cylinder due to improper installation, which could affect its service life.

For earring-mounted installations, pay attention to the earring’s installation angle to ensure the hydraulic cylinder can swing within the correct range.

4. Hydraulic Line Connections

When connecting hydraulic lines, ensure they are clean to prevent impurities from entering the hydraulic cylinder and damaging the seals.

Line connections should be secure and reliable to prevent leakage during operation.

5. Commissioning and Trial Run

After installation, you need to commission and test run the hydraulic cylinder before formal operation. Check for normal operation and abnormal noise and vibration.

During the debugging process, the load should be gradually increased and the performance of the hydraulic cylinder should be observed to ensure that it can meet the working requirements.

There are some important installation points, see the figure below

Correctly selecting a hydraulic cylinder including the appropriate mounting method and strict adherence to installation precautions is crucial for ensuring stable operation and extending its service life. In practical applications, you should select the appropriate mounting method based on specific work requirements and installation conditions, and carefully perform installation work to ensure efficient operation of the equipment.
